Comment
After Raphael's model, today lost, inspired by two antique sarcophagi, one in the Villa Medici, the other in Villa Pamphili, Rome, from which Raphael selected and adapted motifs. A copy of the composition in the Louvre and the Budapest study for Venus (inv. no. 1934) prove that Raphael reworked his earlier composition of the subject painted in grisaille in the Stanza della Segnatura c. 1512-13. The Judgement of Paris is one of the most famous engravings of the Italian Renaissance, and marks a high point in the collaboration between Raphael and Marcantonio. On the different datings of the print, see Achim Gnann in Raphael und der klassische Stil in Rom, Milano 1999, no. 33. Zeno Davoli, Il Giudizio di Paride e Marcantonio Raimondi. Problemi, in Grafica d'arte 76 (2008), pp. 14-17, proves the existence of two different plates after having found an impression from the worn and reworked plate with Antonio Salamanca's address, indicating that the publisher, unsatisfied with the reworking, commissioned a complete recut attributed to Marco Dente (Bartsch XIV.198.246), see our inv. no. 45807. For the iconography of the print and on the opinions about the model, see New Haven 1986-87.
