Comment
Among the ten compositions presently attributed to the master, The Massacre of the Innocents is his most ambitious multi-figure woodcut. It is related to the tapestry series known as the Life of Christ or the Scuola nuova, eleven of which survive today in the Vatican Museums. While Raphael is named as inventor in the inscription, the extent of his involvement in the design is unknown. Giulio Romano, with the assistance of other artists from Raphael’s workshop, played an important role in the tapestry compositions, including the Massacre of the Innocents.
